So there goes the second season of The Sarah Jane Adventures, and we already know the 3rd is guaranteed for next year. I like that this series has had an overarching theme of Sarah Jane (re)discovering her family in both the past and present, culminating in an episode where her position as Luke's real mother is cemented more than ever before. It's almost like the writers were aware of a problem from the first season, which I've mentioned before, that SJS' mother/daughter relationship with Maria somewhat overshadowed the fact that Luke was the one she'd actually adopted. Yasmin Paige's decision to leave the show and the introduction of Rani allowed the dynamic to change slightly, and "Enemy of the Bane" confirmed SJS and Luke as a family, overcoming the challenge of Mrs Wormwood, the woman who actually created Luke.

Another theme has been returning heroes and villains, of which this episode had both. Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier was an exciting return from a character from the classic series, even if he's looking pretty frail now and accordingly didn't get much to do - but he did get to shoot a Bane so yay the Brig. And Samantha Bond totally made the two-parter as Mrs Wormwood, full of fantastic, sniffy one-liners, and surprisingly for a kids' show injecting an unmistakeably Oedipal tone to her maternal feelings for Luke.

Overall, a pretty impressive finale, and looking good for the third season keeping up the quality.

I, too, enjoyed the season (although they played up Clyde's role as the smart ass WAY too much). I still miss Maria (they fooled me with the "mother's wedding" line into thinking they'd be back for the finale) but Rani is a nice addition (and I'm still not convinced she isn't THE Rani). And if Luke isn't careful, he's going to grow up to be quite the looker.

The Brig, naturally, was my favorite part of the season. It was sad to see him so infirmed and not more "action ready" but I liked having him back. I can see why he came back on SJA instead of the far more action reliant DW. Here's hoping we see him again.

Well apparently he's 79 today, so all things considered he's not doing too badly.

I was almost worried Mrs Wormwood was going to cross the line, with some of her comments and stroking his face.
