Book review: The Silent Stars Go By

Dan Abnett's Doctor Who novel The Silent Stars Go By was published around the same time as Michael Moorcock's The Coming of the Terraphiles, but fortunately I enjoyed this one a lot more, a wintery story on a planet whose terraforming is going wrong and causing constant harsh winters. Since they're on the cover it's no spoiler to say the Ice Warriors are behind it, one of the few classic recurring villains not to have made it to the revived show yet. Maybe their voices, which are best in small doses (remember that installment of The Seeds of Death where Patrick Troughton was on holiday so the episode consisted almost entirely of asthmatic Martians slowly wheezing at each other?) have kept them off the screen, they're certainly among the most ambiguous classic villains so they work well on the page.
