Here we go then, Being Human Series 2 getting into its stride.

- I don't think it's a big secret, I was a bit worried after last week. A lot of things felt just that little bit off to me and I was hoping it was just how some "season premieres" can be a bit wobbly and things would get better. I reckon my opening sentence gives it away, Episode 2.2 has made me a lot more confident, I was a lot happier this week. It felt a bit like 1.1 in the way that so much was going on that it felt (in a good way) a lot longer than an hour, but unlike last week the various threads didn't overwhelm the story.
- Also very welcome was a return to last series' tone: Last week I felt as if the humour was compartmentalised into Annie's story and the rest was largely bleak. This time around Toby Whithouse gave us back the jumps in tone that make the show what it is, with humour in the middle of the darkness and vice versa. Besides, when you've got a cast so good at "turning on a sixpence" as the expression usually goes, you really should use that.
- And so Annie's story first; so far it's not been as easy as last year to define the episode as "a George ep," "a Mitchell ep" etc, but although Mitchell had plenty to do overall this felt like "an Annie ep" to me.
- Saul: The trailers haven't been shy about showing Saul knocking Annie about right from the off, so I had my suspicions that maybe he wasn't another Owen for Annie to get mixed up in, but a good guy who's got something wrong with him. And so he was, but I wouldn't have guessed exactly what was going on. The pills he surreptitiously took last week were a bit of a red herring, I guess you can explain them as he had an ongoing condition after his first accident. When he first hears Terry Wogan talking to him through his TV obviously the initial thought is that they were antipsychotic drugs or something, but no, Sir Tel really is talking to him - or at least someone is pretending to be him.
- And how exciting is that someone? I know Toby Whithouse had said there'd be more about The Men With Sticks And Rope this series but I didn't think we'd get so much so soon. TMWSAR are here, and they want Annie! Awesome. And actually getting to see the corridor beyond the death-door? Not that it was anything other than you'd expect, but actually seeing it seemed such a big deal after the first series, where TMWSAR were only ever alluded to in a way only people who'd seen the pilot would pick up on. Actually having Saul name them was hugely exciting, let alone seeing the corridor.
- Where this week's story was taking Annie, i.e. back to invisibility: I did wonder at the end of 1.6 if her powers had got so big that it would get in the way of peril, as in "well it doesn't matter, she can wave her hand and make everything OK," so there was a good chance we'd need to see her brought back a bit. As a way of going about it I thought it was a particularly interesting way to do it, and certainly unexpected. Yes, once again I'm going on about the fact that I really didn't expect to get so much TMWSAR so early on, and potentially so central to the storyline (I mean using Saul failed, but they're not going to give up trying are they?) Plus giving Annie a romantic interest outside the trio, and who therefore can no longer see her, should make for an interesting arc.
- On to Mitchell, and he got a lot more to do this week, and Toby Whithouse has started to play his hand about where his story's going. It's always been clear that the power vacuum Herrick left would be a major feature of the series, and now we get an example of how easily these things might fall apart. Also we start to see how easily Mitchell might fall into taking Herrick's place.
- Seriously though, Mitchell, stay away from Lucy. Not just 'cause so many people seem to have instantly hated her (I'm a bit meh about her myself) but because she's obviously going to be trouble. A bit too much time on her hands, a lot of questions to be asked.
- Actually she joined in on the gay jokes didn't she? So I'm joining the people who don't like her. I was getting a bit worried after that sequence but then after that we got a very nicely told story featuring a gay vampire/human couple that could have been told in exactly the same way with a straight couple. And the gay vampire (gampire?) was Steve John Shepherd from This Life!
- Paul Rhys has had a lot of "the internet" making fun of his "I was in Baghdad" line last week, and not unfairly, but after this week it's obviously not just down to him. What with his speech about the massive churches and the coastlines surrounded by bones, Ivan is obviously intended to be a massive drama queen.
- And we find out whether he was in on George's seduction by Daisy: No he wasn't. And in what so far seems pretty consistent for the way their relationship has been portrayed, he appears more clinically interested in it than angry.
- As well as George's scenes with Ivan and his involvement with the plot to help Carl escape, we also had a continuation of last week's George/Nina story. I can't say Nina ending up in Kemp's clutches was a surprise, but then I don't think it was meant to be, all the Nina storyline plus CenSSA taking an interest in her were clearly leading up to that.
- When Nina made the comment to George that he'd shortened her life a lot more than cigarettes could, I obviously got very anti her when she didn't apologise after it clearly hurt him. But as her storyline went on it became clear that despite things being better between them than they were at the start of 2.1, she still actually does sometimes want to deliberately hurt him.
- I also liked Toby Whithouse's economy of storytelling in having Carl chip in to give Nina advice about how to deal with George. The outsider who sees things more clearly than the insiders, and of course Carl would sympathise with someone who'd unwillingly hurt someone they loved. In fact people hurting the ones they love was very much the theme of the episode, and may well end up being that of the series.

I absolutely loved this episode. I was a bit wrongfooted last week, but this week everything moved on quickly, and not necessarily in the direction that I'd predict. I groaned a bit at the gay vampire line and yet that was done very elegantly; Saul's talking TVs were straight out of left field. Incredibly enjoyable stuff.

I like that they're not rushing the CenSSA story, there's 2 more episodes to play with this year than last, and so far it looks like they're pacing the ongoing story right. After tonight though I wonder if they're the only main baddie or how much we'll be seeing of the MWSAR's plans.

I LOVED this episode, it was so much better than last week's.

About the gay jokes, I was surprised that they immediately assumed the vampire was a man. For all they knew, it could have been a woman, or did I miss any clues? (I've only seen it once so far, and without subtitles, so I probably missed a few things.)

Also, I am quite sure that in the opening scene, when Carl's lover walks in, Mitchell calls him queer. But maybe he can be forgiven because he was not feeling his best, what with going cold turkey and all.

I think it was mentioned that he'd lived with another man, so they were probably already looking for Carl by the time he got to the hospital. The policeman did mention they had tickets for Sister Act but I've got to assume they had something more to go on.

Yeah I noticed that when I first watched it, and I think that's why I was particularly annoyed with the sequence of gay jokes straight afterwards. Of course, on second viewing it makes complete sense; it's obvious that the rest of the time Carl's sexuality is of no consequence to Mitchell, but yes when he's going cold turkey it makes complete sense that he'd say that to try and get a rise out of them.

I watched it again just now, and the policeman also said they were two men living in a one-bedroom flat, so I guess that does make it pretty obvious.

And I had missed the Sister Act bit first time around, so thanks for mentioning it. Made it easier to catch now.
