Book review: The Haunted Hotel
3rd-Jun-2010 12:03 pm
The pile of free classics from The Times doesn't seem to get any smaller, and next up one from "Chillers" week (I'm guessing they were given out around Halloween last year) and Wilkie Collins' The Haunted Hotel. Centering on a sinister but oddly sympathetic Countess, and a palace-turned-hotel in Venice, it's a lot of fun in a convoluted, hidden passageways, weird smells coming from the basement, gothic mystery kind of way; but I also really enjoyed Collins' sudden, unexpected doses of very dry humour in the middle of all the spooky stuff. It's also fairly short and to-the-point, not overwritten like I sometimes imagine novels of the genre to be. Overall quite a fun little obscure classic.
