Book review: The Girls of Slender Means
23rd-Jun-2010 09:14 am
Muriel Spark's The Girls of Slender Means is another one from the "London" series of modern classics, this time set in 1945, between VE Day and VJ Day, in a women's hostel (although god forbid anyone refer to it as such - it's a club.) It paints a vivid picture of heady but uncertain days where rationing was a way of life and half their transactions seem to be a barter system based around clothing stamps. It's a lighthearted, witty story that suddenly turns to tragedy, and I found it a quick, easy read.
