Book review: Utterly Monkey

Jumping between London and Northern Ireland, Nick Laird's Utterly Monkey (yet another free book from The Times a couple of years ago) is a weird hybrid of lots of different genres: Nostalgic coming-of-age story, romance, comedy about modern life, political satire about Ireland and thriller. Danny, a Northern Irish lawyer now living in London, is confronted by his past when an old friend arrives unexpectedly to stay, and he himself has to go to Belfast for a case, accompanied by a beautiful new colleague. It's got funny dialogue and some likeable characters, and I enjoyed it although there seem to be a few too many things going on here at the same time, you never feel as if the book has quite settled into what it wants to be - a subplot about a terrorist is a strange match for the rest of the story. Still worth a look though.
