Book review: The Masque of the Red Death
4th-Nov-2011 04:36 pm
For something appropriate over Halloween, the pile of books threw up a collection of Edgar Allan Poe short stories including some of the best-known like "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Pit and the Pendulum." I've always struggled to get into Poe, and while I finished these I still find his writing style a bit too florid for me, and his recurring themes (especially dead wives and being buried alive) a bit too frequently recurring. Some of the grotesque little stories I wasn't already familiar with were quite entertaining, but it hasn't really convinced me that Poe is for me ("The Raven" aside, obviously.)
