Book review: The Understudy
29th-Feb-2012 04:57 pm
David Nicholls' second novel, after Starter for Ten and before the juggernaut of One Day was The Understudy, in which another of Nicholls' rather hopeless male leads is this time the unfortunately-named Steve McQueen, a struggling actor understudying a big Hollywood star in his West End vehicle. In between wishing the leading man harm so he can get his big break, Steve's wishing him harm because he's fallen for the star's wife. I chuckled to myself on the train several times while reading The Understudy but it definitely feels like the slightest of Nicholls' books so far: It's an enjoyable read but a day after finishing it I'm already struggling to remember much about it.
