Book review: Northanger Abbey
17th-Sep-2012 02:03 pm
While I was waiting for my replacement Kindle to arrive, I fortunately still had a few "old-style" books that I hadn't read, including the couple of remaining Jane Austen novels I'd been saving. Northanger Abbey wasn't my favourite in terms of plot, there's not a hell of a lot actually going on to get interested in, but it did have quite a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, especially in terms of the plot developments the heroine thinks are going on - a fan of Gothic novels, Catherine is constantly expecting to find mysterious notes in dusty cabinets and women bricked up in their rooms by cruel husbands, and constantly disappointed. And if you're a fan of Austen's bitchy side, there's a bit of a bonus in a foreword that's essentially the author doing a big flounce over a publisher who initially bought the rights to Northanger Abbey then held on to it, unpublished, for years.
